I was walking outside my home near Xcuyun in the Yucatan, Mexico when I noticed something unusual. The soil between the rocks on the ground was darker. Richer. Different from everything around it.
I bent down, put my hand through it — and then went down a rabbit hole that completely blew my mind.
The Maya called this soil Box Lu'um — black earth. They knew thousands of years ago it was the richest soil in the region, packed with nutrients and organic matter.
